Sales Tax Rate Change - Effective January 1, 2017

Effective January 1, 2017, the sales tax rate in Santa Clara County decreased by 1/4 of a cent. This was the result of the expiration of a temporary ¼ cent State sales tax that was approved by the voters in the November 2012 election (Proposition 30).  As a result of the decrease, Campbell’s total sales tax rate will be 8.75% as of January 1, 2017.  This rate consists of the following components:

a. Statewide sales tax rate of 6.25%

b. County transit and transportation of 1.0%

c. BART operating and maintenance tax of 0.125%

    (effective July 1, 2012)

d. Campbell’s local sales tax rate of 1.25%

e. County Retail Transactions Tax of 0.125% (effective April 1, 2013)

Beginning April 1, 2017, the sales tax rate will increase by 0.50% to a total rate of 9.25% due to the passage of Measure B (2016 VTA ballot measure to fund transportation projects).

The sales tax process is administered by the State Board of Equalization (BOE). Additional detailed information regarding the change in sales tax rate may be found at the BOE website at www.boe.ca.gov or by calling the BOE at 800-400-7115.

Questions on the change or other matters related to sales tax may be directed to the City Finance Department at 408-866-2111.
